Fractures, Bone Growth and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Bones are complex tissues, and bone growth and healing are multi-faceted processes, There are a number of challenges when trying to treat bone fractures.
What & Why?
HBOT is known to enhance stimulation of the production of collagen, a tough fibrous material that fills the space between broken bones and helps knit them back together. HBOT also promotes fast growth of new capillaries in the affected areas, which in turn brings more oxygen and nutrients to the bones.
Its positive effects on bone and soft tissue regeneration have made Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy a sought-after complementary therapy in the sporting community.
Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The most essential substance in the repair of any tissue is oxygen. The body cannot store oxygen in the same way that it can store other substances. Without sufficient oxygen the strength of the tissue repair is much weaker than normal.
Breathing oxygen in a Hyperbaric chamber gives us up to 400% increase from the amount of oxygen available in normal air.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy dissolves oxygen directly into the plasma, brain and cerebrospinal fluids.
During a HBOT session, the body receives pure oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure. This boosts the body’s ability to circulate oxygen, allowing it to seep through into areas where the blood flow is poor or blocked.
HBOT also helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, improve circulation, boost the immune system and suppress infection.
General guidance, especially on protocols and the likelihood of benefit, is obtained from the coordinator of the Oxygen Helpline Petra Kliempt BSc MPH PhD, who is the Hon. Specialist Trainer in Hyperbaric Medicine to the NHS in Scotland. The Oxygen Helpline and MS National Therapy Centres are also assisted by the Hon. Medical Adviser Emeritus Professor Philip B.James
Our centre operates a self-referral process.
It is always recommended that clients visit their GP or Consultant before commencing HBOT.
There is no intention implied or otherwise that HBOT is given so with the intention of it being a cure diagnosis or as a preventative for any disease. Any references, studies or testimonials on our website, or in our literature does not imply that similar results will occur when the same therapy is experienced by another.
